Merry Christmas – Feliz Navidad

There are nine days of festivals in Mexico which make up the Christmas celebration called the Posadas. These start on 16th December and end on 24th December. Posadas means an inn and the festival commemorates the journey taken by Mary and Joseph. Figures representing the Holy Family are taken to a different house each night and a song is sung asking for shelter.

On Christmas Day, Mexican children are blindfolded and use sticks to try and break the piñata – a clay pot that swings on a rope. It is filled with sweets which fall out when the pot is broken.

Children also receive a gift on January 6th from the Three Wise Men.
